Pastor’s Memo: Our COVID-19 pandemic has been complicating our schedules in ways we could hardly have imagined. Work, entertainment, travel, school, leisure, shopping, social, worship...nothing seems to fit like it used to. We've adjusted and re-arranged and deleted. We've chosen new patterns and found new rhythms for our days and weeks and months. I hope the next time range (years, then decades) doesn't come into play. That would mean monumental shifts in everything we do. That kind of extended time frame may even cause adjustments to be noticeable in who we are. What is a calendar year without baseball and high school sports and tail-gating? What about concerts and yard sales and foreign vacations? Weddings and funerals are not the same. What we have come to expect as regular and natural is being re-defined. When will it ever be again what we once knew so well? I have no idea. And whatever is offered as a picture of that future is only guesswork. In the mean time, we can be patient. We can continue to be civil with each other. We can guard against what the Greeks called "acedia." It means "without care." Apathy, boredom, listlessness. These are traps into which humans have fallen across the centuries. The early Church likened acedia to sloth, the fourth Deadly Sin. It's traditionally situated between wrath (#3) and greed (5th). Isn't it grand to know this particular human frailty sits smack dad in the middle of the deadly pack? My word of caution to all of my readers on this first Wednesday of the month, strive to practice this sin less often and aspire to one lower on the list; like gluttony or lust. On second thought, aspire to practice one of the Seven Virtues. I may list them next Wednesday.

“Ask the Pastor”
Our Calvary E-Navigator is now coming to you three times a week; Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. This arrangement is for this season of pandemic isolation. Our E-Navigators will be a forum for up-dates and prayer chains and other congregation news. It will be a way to stay connected in a more worshipful way. Monday's edition will include an "Ask the Pastor" segment. Readers will be invited to ask me questions on any appropriate subject. My response will be the Pastor's Memo for Monday. I will not promise to answer every question as there may not be enough room. You will be able to post your question by calling the Pastor or the church office or by replying to this e-mail.
Questions received by Friday will be considered for the following Monday’s segment.
Without worship on Sundays, we are counting on everyone to let us know about your prayers requests. Please contact the church office (574-457-3778) with any information or updates. Our goal is to continue to supply everyone with the information needed to stay in touch during this pandemic. If you know of someone who would like to be added to either the e-navigator list or the e-mailed Prayer Chain list, please let the church office know. Thank You!
Beacon Health Systems is looking for community volunteers to make homemade masks for use by healthcare workers and to distribute to the public. If you can help with this project, please contact Patty Langley, Community Health Coordinator, at 574-850-4368.
Indiana UMC Annual Conference scheduled for June 11-13, 2020 has been rescheduled.
The new schedule includes two one-day meetings: The first on a Saturday in August in Marion and
the second on a Saturday in October in Indianapolis. More information to come…
The May/June issue of the Upper Room is now available in the church office. If you would like to pick up a copy, just call ahead and I will be happy to bring one out to your car. As always, donations of $1 are always accepted for Upper Rooms.
The problem has been resolved and the heat has been restored to the classrooms upstairs. The final invoice came in under the estimate of $5,828.75. The actual cost of the restoration was $5,453.75. Our funding campaign has brought in $1,945 toward that expense. Please continue to give toward the restoration while maintaining your current pledge level. Mark your envelope for this special cause as "Repair Heat" and it will be earmarked for the cost of the repair. Thank You!
We are updating the prayer chain lists and all are welcomed to be included. You can be a part of the Phone Prayer Chain (day or night) or you can be included in the e-mailed prayer chain list that arrives on Mondays. We are also beginning e-mailed updates for concerns throughout the week. Please contact the church office to be added to the list.
